Sun protection for a 1:1 architectural model by legendary BAUHAUS director Mies van der Rohe

It is nearly a century ago now that steel and glass began to hold a deep fascination for the pioneers of modernist architecture and become a major factor in the rising popularity of avant-garde aesthetics. The large glass facades made a stunning impression, yet the technological standard unfortunately still lagged behind. Unsurprisingly, the bold design of architects like Mies van der Rohe were not without problems such as significant heat build-up on the inside when exposed to strong sunlight.

This was the point of departure for a building erected in 2013 by the M.I.K. (Mies in Krefeld) project team in Krefeld, Germany, under the heading “MIES 1:1 The Golf Club Project”. A 1:1-scale walk-through model of the Krefeld clubhouse, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1930 but never actually built, was constructed directly at the original location on the former Egelsberg airfield.

Right from the start of the planning phase, the initiators recognised the need to combine high architectural interest with a cosy atmosphere for the anticipated stream of visitors to this bungalow model, which is literally bathed in sunlight.

The open-plan layout on all sides posed daunting challenges for the temporary sun protection, which contrary to established practice was not to take the form of roller blinds or awnings.
Aachen-born Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – the iconic BAUHAUS director whose architectural works include the world-famous “Barcelona Pavilion” – had close ties with the Krefeld silk industry and particularly with Verseidag. After being awarded the contract for Verseidag’s so-called HE-building only a short while after the company was set up, this extraordinary architect was asked to design and construct homes for Verseidag’s founders Lange and Esters.

It was therefore only logical that the task of designing suitable sun protection should be entrusted to the experts in Verseidag’s sunprotex department in Krefeld.
From the time of the very first contact, the idea of using air flow and light as shading elements was born.

The distinctive textile blind that was created based on a non-flammable TREVIRA CS fabric from the sun protection collection did not simply provide visitors with elegant and airy protection from the sun’s rays; due to its special finish, it also succeeded in preserving its timeless visual appeal right up until the end of the model project in spite of the often adverse weather conditions.

Yet another example of how Verseidag rises to constantly evolving architectural challenges with creativity – and an ability to get the job done.

New products for interior ceilings

September 1st, 2020 took place the grand opening of the first pollingual educational complex "Adymnar" in Kazan. The largest complex educational institution in the country of Tatarstan, designed for 2.500 students.

The project of the polylingual school became a prize-winner in the competition Project "Construction School 2020". The founder of the competition is the Union of Architects of Russia. The developer of the school project was the State Unitary Enterprise "Tatinvestgrazhdanproekt".

The basis of the project and interior decoration was the use of modern and fireproof building and finishing materials, including those that meet modern design trends for secondary schools.

The innovative textiles pure! insight heavy B4063 from Verseidag-Indutex GmbH were selected and approved for the finishing of the ceiling space.

The Russian Businesspartner of Verseidag, Stroy Profi , offered seemee pure! insight heavy B4063 as the ideal textile for this project.

Verseidag has developed seemee pure! insight heavy B4063 with a PVC free, water based coating on a 100% Polyester fabric as an innovative high performance ceiling covering. Over 4.000 m2 of textiles were installed.

The uniqueness of seemee pure! insight heavy B4063 includes the latest technologies that allow the use of this water-based coated textile, while all the technical characteristics were obtained above other analogues. This technology allows to get the most secure type of architectural textile for interior decoration and environmental safety. The position of the canvas in the installed system is fully suitable for applying varnish and paint coatings.

Free of heavy metals, toxic materials and volatile PVC compounds
seemee pure! insight heavy B4063 ensures the highest indoor air quality.

All manufactured textiles for interior decoration must pass highest fire safety regulations. seemee pure! insight heavy B4063 passed the Russian fire certification and received the KM1 category without any remark.

Thanks to this innovative concept, the production and installation of ceiling and wall systems is simple, fast and free of any contamination.

Highly tear-resistant containers

For several decades now, Verseidag’s outstanding manufacturing expertise has also included the supply of highly tear-resistant materials with above-average adhesive properties. Product characteristics such as safety, reliability and stability play a particularly important role in load testing applications.
One unusually challenging assignment for the development and sales team was when a long-standing customer approached us looking for a material with much better tear resistance than anything so far available in the Verseidag portfolio. The specification called for tensile strengths exceeding 17,000 N/5 cm and adhesion of > 180 N/cm. The intended application was a container filled with up to 110,000 litres of water – for example, for load testing on cranes or ship lifts.
The principal difficulties here were weaving such a strong raw fabric and applying such a large amount of PVC paste using a knife coating blade. The aim was to achieve a final weight of 3000 g/m² during the coating process, to enable the material to withstand the extreme loads occurring in end-use conditions.
Following numerous modifications to the PVC composition, Verseidag eventually found the right balance between the weaving and coating parameters, so that the product in question could be manufactured in line with the customer’s mechanical specification.

Conveyor belt for high speeds

No premature detachment of the silicone coating

The challenge was to develop a silicone-coated conveyor belt that can be used at high speeds during plant operation without any impairment of durability – either as a result of the centrifugal forces or due to the mechanical load.
Steps had to be taken to prevent the silicone coating from being detached from the fabric prematurely. At the same time, the coating was not allowed to pierce the back of the fabric.
Owing to the high centrifugal forces, and in the knowledge that silicone exhibits poorer adhesive properties than PVC, a suitable solution could only be found together with the silicone supplier. A new type of silicone with improved adhesive properties needed to be developed.
Following several months of development work plus a series of trials in cooperation with the supplier, Verseidag succeeded in improving the adhesive properties on the front and adjusting the viscosity such that the silicone coating no longer pierces the other side of the fabric.
This new product helped the customer become more competitive and increase their share of the market.

From low-wick to no-wick

Tent material life further extended

The capillary effect causes water – and very often dirt too – to penetrate into coated tent materials. At the end of the drying process, a combination of dirt and bacteria remains. Dark lines or coloured “crosses” are clearly visible in the material.
This effect can be observed in ordinary fabrics if the PVC coating is damaged or the edges are not sealed.
Several tent rental companies challenged Verseidag to develop a product for the premium rental market.
More than 20 years ago, their ideas and suggestions inspired Verseidag to push ahead with the development of a premium product with low-wick properties. This new product reduced the capillary effect – and the phenomenon referred to as wicking (water absorption) – to a minimum. The life not only of the material but also of the tents in general was significantly extended as a result.
A new challenge arose during the last few years: Verseidag received a growing number of enquiries from tent rental firms and manufacturers – especially in tropical regions – regarding ways to reduce the wicking effect still further and make the material more durable in conditions of high relative humidity. Ideally, the capillary effect would then be avoided altogether.
Verseidag took up the challenge and came up with a next-generation tent product, which we call “no-wick”!
Unlike conventional low-wick treatment methods, which take place on the finished fabric, each individual thread of Verseidag premium materials is treated with a protective, fluorocarbon-based coating. Not only the fabric surface but also the individual threads resist water absorption in this way, leading to a further major extension of the material life.
